Bernard Lietaer published his book in 2001 and it has since then become one of the most influential books on people looking for alternatives to the dominant mono-currency financial system. Events since then, in particular the global financial crisis of 2008, have only served to confirm the main ideas of the book:

  • That the world is facing four longterm big trends – an Age Wave of an increasingly older population; an Information Revolution led by technological advances; Climate Change and Biodiversity Extinction; Monetary Instability
  • That the dominant financial ‘system’ is not equipped to deal with these multiple challenges alone
  • That monetary diversity is as necessary for a world of ‘sustainable abundance’ as biodiversity is for the health of ecosystems.
